Animal Rights

The mark of a humane and civilized society lies in how we treat the most vulnerable among us. We call for an intelligent, compassionate approach to the treatment of animals.

A Stein/Ware administration will:

  • Outlaw all inhumane treatment of animals for food, clothing, sport, entertainment or any other purpose
  • Create a national animal abuser registry of people convicted of animal cruelty crimes, recognizing the strong connection between violence against animals and other forms of violence
  • Ban “puppy mills” and sale of exotic or endangered animals
  • Support spay and neuter clinics to prevent overpopulation and killing of companion animals
  • Rapidly phase out the use of animals in product testing and all non-essential use of animals in scientific research. Apply rigorous standards for humane treatment of any animals that are essential in research
  • Repeal “ag-gag” laws, which infringe on civil liberties and the First Amendment right to free speech. Activists who expose inhumane conditions that animal industries hide from the public should be given the same protection as whistleblowers who expose corruption
  • Implement policies in support of the “No Kill” movement to improve rehoming in animal shelters and correct our collective failure to value and protect the lives of homeless companion animals. Consider euthanization only when veterinary and/or behavioral experts have determined that an animal’s condition is untreatable and the animal has little or no chance of recovering an acceptable quality of life.
