Jill Stein honors Aaron Bushnell’s tragic sacrifice to stop genocide

Seattle, WA - Jill Stein, Green Party presidential candidate, made the following statement in response to news that Aaron Bushnell, a U.S. Air Force serviceman, had died after setting fire to himself outside the Israeli embassy in Washington D.C. to protest US support for Israel’s genocidal assault on Palestinians in Gaza.

“Rest in power Aaron Bushnell,” Dr. Stein posted on her social media channels, quoting his words: “I will no longer be complicit in genocide. Free Palestine!” Dr. Stein added, “May his sacrifice deepen our commitment to stop genocide now.”

“This extraordinary sacrifice brings into greater focus the immense horror that our government is committing in our name,” continued Dr. Stein. “Aaron Bushnell was very clear that he committed this extreme act to protest our government’s extreme policies that are killing thousands of innocent people in horrific ways. His sacrifice is reminiscent of that of Buddhist monks protesting US-backed oppression of their people in Vietnam. It is truly tragic that the horrific actions of the US and Israel have provoked such a desperate sacrifice.”
